Scrum intro #1: Myths in Scrum

Updated: Oct 29, 2022

3 most often myths in the scrum with new teams.

  1. "There is no deadline"

  2. "Scrum will solve all our problems"

  3. "No need to document the process"

Navigating teams based on these attitudes will be devastating and postpone product delivery, permanent.

So...

Let's debunk them.

We will go through each and check for the solution.

1. A deadline does exist.

Someone who invests their resources (money, people, equipment, time) in the development of a product is looking for ROI. (return on investment)

If the team is not aware of the deadline then the question is was it communicated with the team? Is the team aware of the deadline?

2. Scrum won't solve problems but will help you recognize them.

If there is a unique strategy that serves the team, how agile is that? The idea is to inspect and adapt to continuously improve and learn.

3. Yes, document the process.

Many teams are not consistent in documenting the process due to a lack of time. There is no scheduled time to write the documentation, or the team is under stress due to being aware of the delivery deadline and they decide to write the documentation later.

Having the idea that you can follow up sometimes later with documentation often leaves out important details. They understand the importance of documenting, but don't prioritize. Later you have missing thoughts as it's impossible to remember everything.

So what should we do?

Previous sentences gave a glimpse but here are more actionable tips you may carry with you to better assist the team:

Tip #1: Set a deadline that is achievable. The team must come to a way of work that will perfectly suit them. SM and PO are here to support them along the way.

Tip #2: In the agile world, nothing is black on white.

Tip #3: Take one step at a time, no rush.
